Grommet Mooring Tail
FBR Grommet Mooring Tails are synthetic rope tails formed into an endless loop, with two load-bearing legs between the connection points. Available in nylon (polyamide), polyester, or polyester–polyolefin mixed fibers, they provide elastic extension and energy absorption in combination mooring systems. The grommet arrangement offers greater assembly strength than a corresponding single-leg tail made from the same rope. Protective covers help reduce abrasion at the end loops.
These tails are used with HMPE or steel wire main lines in ship-to-shore mooring, including tanker terminal arrangements designed for grommet tails. Material, finished length, and connection dimensions are selected to match the required strength and load–extension response of the complete mooring system.

BENEFITS
- Increased Assembly Strength
- Elastic Energy Absorption
- Protected End Loops
- Configurable Materials and Dimensions
APPLICATIONS
- Wire-Rope Combination Mooring
- HMPE Main Line and Grommet Tail Systems
Single Leg vs. Grommet Mooring Tail
| CHARACTERISTICS | SINGLE LEG | GROMMET |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Single-leg | Grommet / endless loop |
| Compliance | Higher | Lower |
| Stiffness | Lower | Higher |
| Elongation | Higher | Lower |
| Typical Selection | General-purpose applications | Higher-strength or specific system requirements |
| Key Consideration | Energy absorption | Strength, stiffness and system configuration |
*The relative comparison assumes the same rope material, construction, constituent-rope diameter, effective loaded length, and applied load. Final selection should use the specified strength and load–extension data for each assembly.
When to Choose a Grommet Mooring Tail?
Choose a grommet tail when the mooring arrangement calls for an endless-loop assembly and its strength, stiffness, and connection geometry meet the system requirements.
Specify strength using the TDBF of the complete grommet assembly. For replacement tails, match the required strength, load–extension characteristics, finished length, and connection dimensions.
Tail length and elastic response should balance dynamic load absorption with allowable vessel movement. Connection hardware must accommodate the grommet geometry and the required bend diameter.
