A 17-Year Service Record for Synthetic Fiber Mooring ropes

When high-performance synthetic ropes first began appearing on large commercial vessels, many operators remained cautious.

Steel wire ropes had been the industry standard for decades. They were familiar, proven, and widely accepted across the tanker sector. Replacing them with synthetic fiber ropes raised an obvious question:

Could they deliver the same reliability over the long term?

In 2008, COSCO selected FBR’s HMPE mooring ropes for the VLCC COSPEARL LAKE, replacing conventional steel wire ropes with a complete synthetic mooring system.

At the time, the decision represented an early adoption of HMPE technology on a vessel of this size.

Operating a 300,000 DWT VLCC places significant demands on mooring equipment.

Lines must withstand repeated loading cycles, frequent handling, and long-term exposure to harsh marine environments. At the same time, vessel operators are continually seeking ways to improve safety and reduce the physical demands of mooring operations.

Manufactured using Dyneema® fiber, FBR’s HMPE ropes offered a lightweight alternative to steel wire while maintaining the strength required for large tanker operations.

The reduced weight simplified handling during mooring, while eliminating many of the maintenance requirements associated with traditional wire ropes.

VLCC COSPEARL LAKE

The true measure of any mooring system is not how it performs on delivery day, but how it performs years later.

More than seventeen years after entering service, the original FBR’s HMPE ropes aboard COSPEARL LAKE continue to operate safely.

Over that period, the ropes have accumulated more than 10,000 hours of mooring service on the vessel, providing a rare long-term reference for HMPE rope performance in the tanker sector.
